Golden Gala: Ayana is injured, Dibaba vs Obiri in the 5000m

World 10000m record holder Almaz Ayana has pulled out of the Rome Golden Gala due to a physical problem. Genzebe Dibaba has confirmed that she will run the 5000m on the track of the Olympic Stadium on 8th June. An important new entry too the line-up is Olympic silver medallist Hellen Obiri.

Twenty-two days to go to the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea. On Thursday 8th June (at 20) the Rome Olympic Stadium will open its doors to the fourth leg of the IAAF Diamond League. It will be again the first Diamond League meeting on European soil this year. Today, the Golden Gala meeting Director Luigi D’Onofrio, who is still working on the starting lists of the meeting, has received the official news that Ethiopian runner Almaz Ayana has been forced to pull out of the meeting due to a physical problem. The 10000m Olympic champion and world record holder was expected to take part in the 5000m over the distance where she clocked 14.12.59 narrowly missing Tirunesh Dibaba’s 14:11:15 world record. Last week Ayana also skipped the Chinese leg of the Diamond League in Shanghai. World bronze medallist Genzebe Dibaba has been confirmed. Dibaba is the fourth runner in history in the 5000m with 14:15.41. The new entry to the starting list is Olympic silver medallist Hellen Obiri, who clocked 14:22.47 in Shanghai setting her personal bets and the 13th fastest time in the all-time list. With this time she is the sixth best performer in history.
